Today, some news was released about our Ravens, and I am here to bring all of you faithful Ravens fans that news. Its not A lot of news, but lets get started:
- Harewood signs- The Ravens have agreed to a contract with 6th round pick, Ramon Harewood, 23, a 6-6, 341 pound OT out of Morehouse today. The deal is a 3 year deal worth around 1.289 Million dollars, and it includes a signing bonus worth $74, 171. Harewood is looked at as a project player that needs some time to develop his game, but has a lot of potential and is versatile, as he can play Tackle or Guard, and has good strength and foot speed for a player his size. I think Harewood could turn into at least a solid back-up in the NFL, as he is 6-6 and 341 pounds and adds depth and versatility to the Offensive Line, so we will just have to see how Ramon develops. If he blows up, he could turn into a regular starter, but lets not get ahead of ourselves just yet, and let Harewood prove himself on the field. Officially, welcome to the city of Baltimore, Ramon!
- Ravens add DC Radio affiliate- The Ravens have partnered with Federal News Radio 1500 AM WFED, a Radio station based in Washington D.C. They will broadcast all of the Ravens home and away games in 2010. This is a move made because the Ravens have a lot of fans in D.C and the D.C area, and that number of fans is growing with the Ravens success the last 2 years. WFED joins Baltimore Radio stations 98 Rock and WBAL 1090 AM as the Ravens stations that cover all of the Ravens games. I think this is a great move, as the Ravens fan base is growing dramatically, and the Ravens have made a move that will please the DC/ DC area Ravens fans. Welcome to the 2010 Ravens family, WFED!

Ever since the Ravens signed Marc Bulger last week, questions have been churning about Troy Smith’s future in Baltimore. One of these questions is, will he stay or go? I think Troy will be gone, considering the fact that he wouldn’t want to be the 3rd string QB, and he already asked for a trade out of Baltimore earlier this offseason in search of a starting job. So with that being said, here are four possible landing spots for Troy Smith:
- Buffalo Bills- Its simple. They don’t have a QB. They have Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm as their QB’s. Pathetic. Talk about a horrible QB core. Smith would be an upgrade over any of those guys mentioned, and Buffalo needs to bring in a new face to be their QB1, especially after passing in Jimmy Claussen ( Twice) in the draft. Also, they would actually have a dynamic trio in Smith and 1st round RB CJ Spiller in the backfield, along with Pro Bowl WR Lee Evans as the WR1. This is the most realistic spot for Smith, and his best shot at starting in 2010.
- Seattle Seahawks- Longtime QB Matt Hasselbeck is getting older, and has been prone to nagging injuries over the last couple years, so for one, Smith would already be better insurance to Hasselbeck than Charlie Whitehurst, Mike Teel, or JP Losman, and two, would better fit Pete Caroll’s system and could be looking at the ” QB of the future” tag if he goes here and impresses. Seattle did bring in Whitehurst to fill that tag, but he has been very underwhelming this offseason, leaving that tag up in the air. I think Smith would love Caroll’s system, as it lets him use his speed and athleticism, and he has good weapons, such as Justin Forsett, Julius Jones, and Leon Washington at RB along with TJ Houshmandzadeh, Deion Branch, and rookie Golden Tate at WR.
- Jacksonville Jaguars- Current QB David Garrard has been looked at as inconsistent and the coaching staff could be losing confidence in him, which could open the door for Smith to come to Jacksonville and push Garrard for the starting QB job. Smith would be in the same backfield as one of the top playmakers in the NFL in RB Maurice Jones-Drew to create a dynamic QB-RB duo, and would have a great young WR1 to throw to in Mike Sims-Walker. This could be a very real destination for Smith.
- San Francisco 49ers- Alex Smith is the starter, but at this point in his career he has been very inconsistent, so if Troy goes here, he could also push Smith for the starting job if he impresses the coaching staff, as the 49ers now have nobody to push Smith for the QB1 spot after trading solid veteran QB Shaun Hill and replacing him with David Carr. They have two other young QB’s with good talent in Nate Davis and Jarrett Brown, but they are still 2-3 years away. 49ers HC Mike Singletary isn’t sold on any of them to be the starter, so a new, athletic QB with a great arm that is also a deadly playmaker with his legs could be what the 49ers need to go from a decent team to a playoff team. Troy Smith and Frank Gore would make a great duo, and he would be throwing to two young superstars in TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree as well.
Wherever Smith ends up, im confident he will be in a position to compete for a starting job. He has a strong arm and is a great playmaker running with the ball with his speed and agility. The highest we could get for Smith at this point is a 6th round pick, but that would be a small price to pay for a team that acquires Smith, who could turn into a great, big time multi-threat QB in the future. He is inexperienced, but with time, I think you will see Troy Smith become a good QB with some team. We will just have to wait to see what team that is.

Yesterday and today, the Ravens have been active in the Free Agent market. I am here to give all you Raven fans some insight to the signings, and a topic I wanted to give my opinion on. Lets get started:
- Ravens sign QB Bulger- Yesterday, the Ravens signed 2 time Pro Bowler, QB Marc Bulger to a 1 year, 3.8 Million dollar deal that could reach up to 5.3 Million if he can hit the contracts incentives. Bulger has spent most of his NFL career with the St.Louis Rams after they signed him off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in 2000. Bulger was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL draft out of West Virginia University, but was released after that years training camp. Bulger has 22,814 career passing yards to go with 122 TD passes and a 84.4 QB rating. Bulger passed for a career high 4,301 yards and 24 TD’s in 2006, before being derailed by injuries and bad teams from 07-09. Bulger provides much needed depth at QB behind Joe Flacco, and is a valuable insurance policy if Flacco gets injured. He also provides great veteran leadership. The 6-3, 208 pound QB is now 33 years old. Welcome to Baltimore, Marc!
- Ravens sign CB Harris- Today, after he originally turned down the Ravens initial contract, the Ravens have agreed to terms with former Pro Bowl CB Walt Harris to an undisclosed 1 year deal. Harris will turn 36 in August. In his career, Harris has totaled 748 tackles and 35 interceptions after being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 1st round ( 13th overall) of the 1996 NFL draft out of Mississippi State University. Harris has also played for the Colts, Redskins, and most recently, the 49ers. Harris missed all of the 2009 seaon with a Knee injury sustained in last years OTA’s. The 5-11, 196 pound CB provides good depth and skill to a position that has some questions, mostly Lardarrius Webb’s and Fabian Washington’s return from Torn ACL’s and their return timetables. Harris will also be a great veteran leader to the Ravens secondary. Again, the details of the contract were not released, but we should find out in a couple days. With that being said, welcome to Baltimore, Walt!
- UPDATE, 7:15 PM: WR Reed signs- WR David Reed has agreed to a 3 year deal worth 1.34 Million dollars. Reed also recieves a 134,000 signing bonus. The 6-0, 191 pound WR was selected by the Ravens in the 5th round of the 2010 NFL draft out of Utah University. Reed turned 23 in March. He is the 3rd Ravens rookie to sign their rookie contracts, joining TE Dennis Pitta and DT Arthur Jones.
- Troy Smiths tenure in Baltimore over?- With the signing of Marc Bulger, this probably means you wont be seeing QB Troy Smith wearing the purple and black in 2010. The 6-0, 225 pound QB, who will turn 26 in July, requested a trade earlier this offseason, but no teams wanted to give up a 5th round pick for the athletic, speedy QB. In limited time, Smith has 558 career passing yards with 3 passing TD’s to go with 109 rushing yards with 2 TD’s in his 3 year career after being drafted by the Ravens in the 5th round of the 2007 NFL draft out of Ohio State. He wants to be given a shot at being a starting NFL QB, and the former Heisman winner has the talent and athleticism, he just needs to be given the opportunity to do so, and everybody knows, its not going to be in Baltimore with the presence of Joe Flacco. I think a team like Buffalo or Jacksonville, Carolina or maybe even the 49ers might take a look at Smith, or a team with nothing to lose, but at this point, the highest your going to get for Smith is a 6th round pick. If all the rumors turn out to be true, its goodbye, Troy.
- QUICK NOTES: Pitta and Arthur Jones official rookie contacts- TE Dennis Pitta’s contract is a 3 year deal worth 1.58 Million with a 371,000 signing bonus.
- DT Arthur Jones’s contract is also a 3 year deal, but worth 1.348 Million with a 133,500 signing bonus.

We all know that Anquan Boldin is a great NFL WR. two 100+ catch seasons, five 1,000+ yard seasons, 3 time Pro Bowler, just to list a couple of his accomplishments.
But today, im not writing about Anquan the football player, im writing about Anquan, the person behind the helmet and shoulder pads.
Most of you dont know about Anquans ” I Help Build” foundation, a non-profit organization he started in 2004. The mission of this foundation is ” To expand the educational and life oppurtunites of underprivlidged children”. Its a great thing to see a pro athlete step up and look out for the people who helped him growing up, and staying true to where he came from. Boldins foundation is a great one that is going for a great cause.
Boldin has numerous events and programs running through his foundation. Boldin holds the annual ” Q-Fest”, where he gives back to his hometown of Pahokee, Florida. He also gives High School grants to Independence HS in Arizona, and his alma matter, Pahokee HS and donates to their Football program. He runs youth football camps, where over 400 kids attend each year that focus on the fundamentals of Football. He even has a dental program, where he donates money to familys and kids that dont have enough money to get their dental problems fixed by themselves. It is truly a great thing what he is doing, and I felt it was necessary to inform you all so you know about his great foundation.
You can check out the foundations website here: www.anquanQ81foundation.com. You can look into the foundations programs further if you want to, make a donation to the foundation, etc.
The foundation is also holding a Twitter contest! If you are the 100th follower of the ” I help Build” foundation on Twitter, you win a signed football by Anquan Boldin! You can also check that out here: www.twitter.com/Ihelpbuild.
UPDATE- You can also follow Anquans foundation on Facebook right here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Anquan-Boldin-Foundations-I-Help-Build-Campaign/126334780739146. Just another way you can help support a great foundation.

Today’s news has been pretty slow, so this issue of ” News and Notes” is not a whole lot, just some updates on previous topics that I thought you would like to know. Here they are:
- Hamlin signing finally official- Even though everybody knows Ken Hamlin is coming to Baltimore, and has known since last Thursday when Hamlin himself confirmed it himself, the Ravens finally made it official today after he passed his physical. Hamlin, the 6-2, 209 pound Saftey, who turned 29 in January, had this to say about joining the Ravens: ” I had a good few days while I was there and I got a good vibe from them”. Hamlin went on to say ” Im just ready to get going. Im excited about it. They have so many weapons and leaders there already”. Hamlins last quote was this ” Im just going to do the best I can to learn and do whatever I have to do to help the team. Ive got a lot to learn. They’ve done a lot this offseason to make it a real powerhouse”. Hamlin, who has 486 career tackles and 14 career interceptions in his 7 year career, will wear #45 in Baltimore. We officially welcome you to Baltimore, Ken!
- Jones and Pitta’s contract salaries released to the public- Both players agreed to contracts yesterday, and here are the salaries:
DT Arthur Jones, the 5th rounder out of Syracuse, will get the standard base salaries of 320,000 in 2010, 405,000 in 2011, and 490,000 in 2012.
TE Dennis Pitta, the 4th rounder out of BYU, will also get the standard base salaries of 320,000 in 2010, 405,000 in 2011, and 490,000 in 2012. Pitta also receives an undisclosed bonus.
Again, not much new news today, but noteworthy.

Today, I am bringing the latest Ravens news to you. Its not a whole lot of news, but its something. Lets take a look:
- Ravens sign draft pick- The Ravens started to sign their 2010 draft picks today, starting with the 5th round pick, Arthur Jones, the 6-3, 305 pound DT out of Syracuse, who turned 24 earlier this Month. It was a 3 year deal, but the terms of the deal have yet to be released. In his college career at ‘Cuse, Jones posted 145 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and a Syracuse record 38.5 TFL. He was also a 2 time All-Big East selection ( 2008 & 2009). In 2010, Jones looks to get some playing time as a back-up DT, but with Haloti Ngata, Kelly Gregg, and fellow rookie Terrence Cody all in front of him on the depth chart, Jones will spend the majority of the time just learning the playbook and defensive schemes so he can make a great impact on this team in the near future.
-UPDATE, 4:29 PM- Pitta signs too- Another Ravens draft pick has signed today, confirmed by GM Ozzie Newsome. The player is 4th round pick Dennis Pitta, the 6-4, 245 pound TE out of BYU. It is a 3 year deal, and like Jones, the terms of the deal were not released to the public yet. From 2005-2006, Pitta, who will turn 25 in 8 days, went on a Mormon mission to the Dominican Republic. He returned in 2007, and from that point on, was a 3-time All-MWC selection ( 07, 08 and 09). Pitta set a BYU record with 221 catches, and is 3rd in BYU history with 2,901 receiving yards, and he had 21 TD’s in his 4 year career as well. Pittas best year came in 2008, when he posted 83 catches for 1,083 yards and 6 TD’s. In 2010, Pitta is battling fellow rookie TE Ed Dickson for the #2 TE spot behind Todd Heap, but both Dickson and Pitta have bright futures in Baltimore.
- WR Mason: This offense can put up 25-35 points a game- I just wanted to voice my opinion on this. Derrick Mason is completely right. In 2009, the Ravens put up 24.4 points a game with a dominating running attack that will continue to dominate in 2010, and the Ravens passing attack is more potent than ever with the acquisations of Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth joining Mason in the WR core, also add a resurgent Todd Heap and tw0 great young TE’s in Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta, and also add a playmaking WR/KR in rookie David Reed. On top of all that, Joe Flacco is now going into his 3rd year as the QB1, so he looks to have a major breakout season. If all goes as planned, the Ravens will have one of the best Offenses in the NFL, along with a top 3 Defense that has also added great players. I say this Offense will put up 28 points a game, so right on, Derrick Mason!
Thats all for today. Check back tomorrow for a new article. Feel free to comment below if you have any opinions on these topics, or contact me at Ravens@Sharpenedtalon.com. You know, it seems like every time I talk to my family, friends, co-workers, etc, about the Ravens, the same 5 questions always come up. Today, I am going to identify those questions, and give you my answers to those questions. Here we go:
- Question #1- Can Ray Rice duplicate his 2009 success in 2010?
My answer is yes. In 2009, Rice rushed for 1,339 yards and 7 TD’s on 254 carries and also totaled over 2,000 All-purpose yards. His touches wont go up much with the presence of one of the top complimentary Running Backs in the NFL in Willis Mcgahee, who went for 544 yards and 12 rushing TD’s ( 14 Total TD’s) himself along with 2 time Pro Bowl FB Leron McClain in the mix, but Rice is a big time playmaker with great speed and agility that can bust off a big play at any given moment. Another reason Rice will continue his success is the whole starting Offensive Line is still intact, so with all this being said, Rice should be able to at least match his 2009 stats. The TD’s might go up just a little bit, but that remains to be seen.
- Question #2- Can Terrell Suggs get back to his 2003-2008 form?
From 03-08, Suggs had 53 sacks, or averaged 8.8 a season, and was a dominant run stopper too. He also made the Pro Bowl 3 times in that 6 year span. Coming into 2009, Suggs was hampered by lingering injuries and never got into top shape, and as a result, registered a career low 4.5 sacks and recorded 59 tackles, his lowest amount since his 2003 defensive rookie of the year season, where he posted 27 tackles and 12 sacks. He also missed 3 games to a Knee injury. With that being said, Suggs is now healthy, in better shape, and has a ton of motivation, so I say you will see the old ” T-Sizzle” in 2010.
- Question #3- Can Joe Flacco make the leap from good to great in his 3rd year?
I say yes. Flacco’s Comp %, Passing yards, Passing TD’s, and QB Rating all went up in 2009 from 2008, and with a new and improved WR core including Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth joining Derrick Mason & Co, he has more weapons to throw to, which means he can stretch the field more often, which is always a good thing for a young developing QB. Its also, as noted, his 3rd year in the NFL and in Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron’s offense, so he has more knowledge of whats going on around him than ever before. 2010 Is poised to be Joe Flacco’s big breakout season.
- Question #4- Can Anquan Boldin become a true #1 WR without Larry Fitzgerald?
Definitely yes. Boldin is a Pro Bowl caliber WR, and has been since his 101 catch rookie season in 2003. In his 7 years in Arizona, he totaled 586 receptions to go with 7,520 yards and 44 TD’s. 5 Of those 7 years he went over 1,000 yards and he has 2 100+ reception seasons. The dude is legit. Now Boldin is a true #1 WR for the 1st time since the emergence of Fitzgerald, and will get more targets than ever. Boldin also doesnt have to worry about being double teamed often, with Mason and Stallworth also causing a concern for opposing defenses. Expect Boldin to have a Pro Bowl season in 2010. Im thinking Boldin goes over the 90 catch mark, totals over 1,200 receiving yards, and gets anywhere from 7-11 TD’s.
- Question #5- How far will the Ravens go in 2010?
My answer is simple. This is a championship caliber football team. You take an improved Offense, along with reloading an already dominant defense equals success. My early prediction is that this team will at least make it to the conference championship game. Could the Ravens win their 2nd Super Bowl? I cant say at this point, but I definitely like our chances. GO RAVENS!!!!!!
Thats all for now. Check back tomorrow for a brand new article. Also, feel free to comment below if you have any opinions on this article, or you can contact me at Ravens@Sharpenedtalon.com.
